Welder jobs abroad: requirements, trade tests and pay
What Gulf and European employers actually test for — welding processes, positions, trade tests — plus real advertised pay from current listings.
What employers actually look for
Employers hire for demonstrated skill, not certificates alone. The processes most in demand are SMAW (stick), GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) — often in combination — on carbon steel, stainless steel and sometimes aluminium. Structural welders, pipe welders and 6G-position welders command the strongest demand.
Beyond the arc, employers value blueprint reading, fit-up skills, knowledge of welding symbols and a clean safety record. An ITI certificate or diploma gets you shortlisted; what gets you hired is the weld test.
Trade tests: how they work
Almost every serious overseas welder hiring includes a practical trade test — you weld a test coupon in a specified position (1G through 6G) under observation. The test piece is then inspected visually and often with non-destructive testing such as dye-penetrant or radiography.
Prepare by practising the positions in the job description, not just your strongest one. Test centres fail candidates most often on root-pass defects, undercut and poor tie-ins — the fundamentals, practised under time pressure.
Certifications that help
An ITI welder trade certificate or equivalent diploma is the baseline most recruiters expect. Internationally recognised welder qualifications strengthen your file, but the employer's own trade test is almost always the deciding factor.
Keep certificates, experience letters and any test reports in one folder — recruiters verify them before you travel, and Gulf employers may ask for them again during onboarding.
Pay: what the listings show
Our current Greece listing for welders and refrigeration technicians advertises €950–€1,100 net per month. Gulf welder pay varies with process, position capability and project type — oil and gas and shutdown work typically pays above general fabrication.
Compare the full package, not just the monthly figure: overtime rates, accommodation, food or food allowance, flights and contract length change the real value of an offer substantially.
Documents and medicals
You will need a passport with long validity, trade certificates, experience letters, photographs and a medical fitness test at an approved centre. Some destinations require a police clearance certificate.
Never pay a recruiter for the job itself. Exam-style fees, medicals and attestation are normal candidate costs; placement fees charged to welders are a red flag — read our fraud-awareness guide before paying anyone anything.
Frequently asked questions
Which welding process is most in demand abroad?
GTAW (TIG) and SMAW (stick) in the 6G position are consistently the most sought-after for pipe work, while GMAW (MIG) dominates structural and fabrication roles. Multi-process welders have the widest options.
What is a 6G welding test?
It is a pipe-welding test position where the pipe is fixed at a 45-degree angle — considered the most difficult because it combines flat, vertical and overhead welding. Passing 6G generally qualifies you for the easier positions too.
Do I need an international certificate to work as a welder abroad?
Not necessarily. An ITI or equivalent trade certificate plus verifiable experience is the usual baseline; the employer's practical trade test is the real gatekeeper.
How much do welders earn in the Gulf?
It depends on process, position and sector. Our current Greece listing advertises €950–€1,100 net per month for welders; Gulf figures vary — always confirm the currency, overtime terms and full benefits package in the written contract.
